Roberto Mancini Reappointed Italy Coach After Pirlo Fallout
Roberto Mancini takes the helm of Italy’s national team for a second stint after former midfielder Andrea Pirlo withdrew from consideration amid a betting‑company controversy, and technical director Paolo Maldini stepped down. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) met swiftly to confirm Mancini as head coach just one day after Pirlo’s exit.
The decision follows Gennaro Gattuso’s departure in April after the Azzurri failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. The appointment reflects the FIGC’s aim to restore stability and proven experience to the squad.
Malago, FIGC president, stated that “Roberto Mancini was the obvious choice” to steer the Italian side forward. The federation appointed former Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri as the new technical director, replacing Maldini who had only been in place for two weeks.
Mancini, 61, previously guided Italy from 2018 to 2023, winning Euro 2020 and a record‑breaking 37‑game unbeaten streak. His return comes as Italy prepares to recommence their Nations League campaign on 25 September against Belgium, followed by a clash with Turkey.
