In brief

On November 4, 2026, Saudi Arabia’s interior minister visited the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime in Sofia, accompanied by Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev. The visit focused on the directorate’s security equipment, operational tactics against drug, human trafficking, migrant smuggling and cybercrime, and highlighted both countries’ joint law‑enforcement cooperation.

On Nov 4, 2026, Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, Saudi Arabia’s Interior Minister, arrived in Sofia to tour Bulgaria’s Ministry of Interior General Directorate Combating Organized Crime, with Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev in attendance, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

During the visit, Prince Abdulaziz was briefed on the directorate’s security capabilities, including the specialized equipment used to monitor and disrupt transnational criminal networks. The briefing covered the directorate’s latest advances in surveillance technologies, cyber‑defence systems and forensic investigation tools that support the agency’s operations within and beyond Bulgaria’s borders.

The agenda also highlighted operational strategies designed to curb drug trafficking, human trafficking, migrant smuggling and cybercrime, all of which are key priorities for the Bulgarian government. Prince Abdulaziz was shown how intelligence gathering, interdiction missions and cooperation with European and international partners help neutralise these threats.

Both ministries underscored a growing focus on joint law‑enforcement collaboration. The Saudi Press Agency reported that the visit accentuated ongoing initiatives that enable bilateral information sharing, joint training exercises and coordinated response protocols against organised crime syndicates.

Prince Abdulaziz also received a detailed overview of the directorate’s current anti‑trafficking operations. These operations involve multi‑agency coordination, public‑private partnerships and international cooperation to detain traffickers and rescue victims across borders.

In addition to discussing specific crime‑fighting tactics, the ministries emphasised the importance of preventing migrant smuggling through enhanced maritime surveillance and by strengthening border checkpoints. The directorate’s cybercrime unit was also highlighted, with a special focus on detecting online fraud networks that manipulate migrant routes.

Concluding the day, the two Interior Ministers addressed the media, noting that the partnership between Saudi Arabia and Bulgaria will continue to evolve, with planned knowledge‑sharing workshops and future joint operations aimed at further limiting organised crime’s influence in the region.
