In brief
At a meeting in Bulgaria on Wednesday, President Iliana Iotova praised Saudi Arabia as a strategic partner, stressing cooperation in security, technology, and economic collaboration. She highlighted the Strait of Hormuz’s importance and suggested a direct air link between Sofia and Riyadh. Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz conveyed the Crown Prince’s congratulations and affirmed deeper ties.
On Wednesday, President Iliana Iotova met with Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Nayef Al Saud in Bulgaria, a visit that underscored the growing weight of security and economic exchanges between the two countries. The gathering also brought Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, creating a comprehensive platform for dialogue.
President Iotova opened the discussion by labeling Saudi Arabia a strategic partner in the Middle East, stressing that security cooperation would lay the groundwork for broader collaboration in other fields. She cited the tensions in the Persian Gulf that threaten the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital to global supply chains, and described the Kingdom’s leadership as a stabilising factor.
She outlined several concrete avenues for partnership, urging both governments to consider establishing a direct air link between Sofia and Riyadh. Such a route would, according to Iotova, open new channels for business, tourism, and cultural exchange and reinforce ties that have long historical roots.
Innovation appeared as a high‑profile priority. Iotova cited Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to modernise and diversify the kingdom’s economy, as offering Bulgaria’s high‑technology firms — especially those specialising in artificial intelligence — the opportunity to contribute to large‑scale development projects. She also noted Bulgaria’s growing interest in the Future Investment Initiative, a forum set up by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to foster public‑private sector links.
Beyond infrastructure and technology, the meeting touched on security and internal affairs. The Saudi Interior Minister returned the Crown Prince’s congratulations on Iotova’s election as president, and expressed optimism that both nations would deepen their relationship. He specifically highlighted Bulgaria’s reliability as a partner in the region.
Prime Minister Iotova reaffirmed her invitation to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, urging him to visit Bulgaria at the next possible opportunity. She underscored the strategic importance of continued high‑level engagement, especially on matters that affect regional stability and economic growth.
During the discussion, the Interior Ministry of Bulgaria also stated that the two countries were stepping up cooperation in security and internal affairs, indicating a formal tightening of bilateral arrangements beyond the oral commitments made at the meeting.
As the conversation concluded, both sides reaffirmed their shared goal of fostering a robust partnership that would enhance security, spur economic development, and promote technological exchange. The meeting’s outcomes signal a pivot toward more integrated cooperation, driven by shared interests in maintaining stability in the Persian Gulf while developing forward‑looking projects under Vision 2030.
According to BTA’s reporting, the discussion confirmed a widening of ties, with new initiatives slated for launch in air connectivity, joint innovation projects, and a reinforced commitment to security collaboration. These efforts are expected to bring fresh opportunities to Bulgarian industry and to strengthen the Kingdom’s influence in the region as part of a broader set of diplomatic and economic strategies flowing from the Vision 2030 agenda.
