In brief

White House officials announced that First Lady Melania Trump negotiated a localized ceasefire in the Russian‑occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, setting a truce to begin on 29 October. The deal, confirmed by both Ukrainian and Russian authorities, includes an evacuation of roughly 6,000 residents and the delivery of humanitarian aid to a town that had suffered a severe power cut and ongoing shelling since February 2022. Trump’s involvement follows her recent public appeals to Russian leadership to address humanitarian issues in Ukraine, including the repatriation of children. Ukrainian MP Davyd Arakhamia said the ceasefire paves the way for an operation to unblock the settlement, while Russian officials noted the right of residents to leave. The fragile truce marks a rare diplomatic intervention by the former first lady amid a relentless front‑line conflict.

The White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump has “successfully secured” a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the front‑line city of Oleshky, saying the truce would begin on 29 October.

Oleshky, captured by Russian forces in February 2022, had been cut off from food, medicine, electricity and clean water, forcing residents to survive on garden weeds and scavenged supplies. The city is surrounded by mine‑laden roads and has only sporadic access to a single, partially operational hospital.

According to the White House statement, Trump and a designated representative “worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms of the localised ceasefire.” The agreement stipulates that both sides will cease firing at 02:00 GMT on 27 October, allowing evacuation and humanitarian aid to enter the area.

Ukrainian MP Davyd Arakhamia said the ceasefire will enable an operation to unblock the settlement and safely relocate its population. He echoed Trump’s assertion, stating that “an operation to unblock the settlement of Oleshky and its surroundings will begin in the near future.”

Russian authorities confirmed that residents wishing to leave would be allowed to do so, while the White House maintained that the ceasefire’s duration had not yet been specified.

This intervention comes after a series of public appeals by Trump since August 2025 to Russian leaders regarding humanitarian crises in Ukraine. Trump’s own letters to President Putin and later responses from Ukrainian President Zelensky’s wife highlighted his growing focus on child protection and civilian safety during the conflict.

The ceasefire marks a significant but intermittent pause in a brutal front‑line siege, providing a fleeting window for relief operations in one of Ukraine’s most desperate populated areas.
