On Thursday afternoon, two men broke into the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), smashing a glass display case that housed a priceless 600‑diamond necklace. The piece, which weighed more than 200 carats, was on loan for a Van Cleef & Arpels exhibition and was valued at over €3 million ($4 m).
The thieves, whose identities are being sought, were seen on CCTV breaking the case and carrying the necklace. Police released the footage to the public, urging anyone who recognizes the suspects to come forward. Witnesses report a voice threatening to shoot if anyone intervenes, and one suspect was believed to be armed.
MAK director Lilli Hollein said the museum had followed a rigorous security plan developed with Van Cleef & Arpels. “The theft has hit us hard,” she said, noting that staff acted calmly, used established emergency procedures, and that no one was injured.
The incident is part of a recent spate of high‑profile museum heists across Europe, including stolen artifacts in Spain, Greece and Italy. Europol warns that such thefts are increasingly violent and may involve organised criminal networks.
