In brief

Ukraine's defence minister announced yesterday that the country now enjoys a "stable" Starlink connection after recent network limits, which were allegedly imposed following remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump to Elon Musk. With speeds above 400 km/h now permitted, drone operations and frontline communications have been fully restored. The incident highlighted the strategic importance of satellite internet for Ukraine’s war effort and the potential geopolitical leverage that can be exercised over such tech. Meanwhile, the conflict continues with new strikes on Russian infrastructure and sporadic power outages in annexed Crimea.

Ukraine’s military now reports a “stable” Starlink connection after a brief period of restricted access.

Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara said the outages, tied to a comment by former President Donald Trump to Elon Musk, had been lifted, restoring full speed for drones and communications. He noted that the network now supports speeds above 400 km/h, a key threshold for operational drones.

The incident underlines how vital satellite internet is for Ukraine’s front‑line operations, as the country relies on both civilian Starlink and its secure counterpart Starshield. Russia is barred from using Starlink, meaning attacks on Russian targets from deep within Ukraine’s territory can bypass the satellites.

While the starlink debacle exploded amid a diplomatic spat between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, it also coincides with ongoing fighting. Russian forces reported power cuts in Crimea following Ukrainian drone strikes, and separatist‑controlled parts of Kharkiv suffered casualties from another Ukrainian attack.

As Ukraine seeks to maintain its digital and logistical edge, the restoration of Starlink signals proves critical for its evolving warfare strategy, where orchestration of unmanned systems and real‑time communications shape battlefield outcomes.
