Tumult in the Operating Room: Earthquake Shakes Kumamoto Hospital During Surgery

Newly released security camera footage captured the moment a magnitude‑6.8 quake jolted Kumamoto General Hospital on 28 July, leaving four surgeries underway in an operating room in disarray.

In the footage, a team of surgeons and the patient were held off‑balance as the equipment swayed violently. Nurses and staff quickly positioned themselves to shield the patient, while a nurse opened a door to secure an evacuation route.

According to hospital officials, all four operations were successfully completed despite the quake’s force.

Outpatient services resumed on 5 August, after being suspended for the days following the earthquake.
