In brief

An alleged driver‑attack on Victoria MP Helen Haines has led police to charge a 43‑year‑old suspect with dangerous driving and assault. The suspect, linked to environmental activist Brendan Nugent, is accused of deliberately hitting Haines outside her office. Haines, 65, has lost a leg and is in critical but stable condition after surgery. Families of the suspect insist they were friends with Haines for over twenty years, while Victoria Police confirm the incident appears isolated with no other threats. The community remains in shock and has gathered to honor Haines with candles and flowers.

A 43‑year‑old man has been charged after Victoria MP Helen Haines was struck by a car outside her office in Wangaratta.

The suspect faces court on Wednesday on charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and a federal offence of causing harm to a public official.

Local media earlier named the alleged attacker as environmental activist Brendan Nugent. His father and partner claimed they had been friends with Haines for over twenty years.

Haines was hit twice by the vehicle after the driver performed a U‑turn to approach, then reversed to strike her again. She was pinned between two cars and later had a leg removed following surgery.

Despite critical injuries, Haines remains in a stable condition after her operation at a Melbourne hospital.

Rod Nugent and partner Christine Cunningham expressed deep sorrow, describing Haines as “deeply respected, valued and much loved” in their statement.

Victoria Police say the incident was deliberate and have searched a property near Tarrawingee. They report no known threats linked to the matter.

The Wangaratta community remains in shock, gathering to light candles and leave bouquets at Haines’ office. Local residents have shown widespread support for the MP amid the tragedy.

Haines won the Indi seat as an independent in 2019 and has since played a pivotal role on Parliament’s cross‑bench, fostering dialogue across a polarized Australian political landscape.
