Russian Drone Strikes Kyiv’s Security Service HQ
A Russian drone crashed into the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) headquarters in the heart of Kyiv on Friday afternoon, striking the office of security chief Oleksandr Poklad. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed the hit and called for a “tangible response” that mirrors the strike.
The unmanned aerial vehicle was reported to have aimed directly at Poklad’s office. While it is unclear whether he was inside at the moment of impact, Zelenskiy has since spoken to him to organise an appropriate counter‑measure and promised that Ukrainian forces would support the response.
Emergency services were on scene immediately. Authorities confirmed that five people were hurt, some of whom were in a nearby café that sustained damage and required hospital treatment for a customer. The Ukrainian foreign minister described the attack as a “major escalation” demanding resolute replies.
The SBU, positioned just outside St. Sophia Cathedral, plays a key role in Ukraine’s war effort, executing deep strikes against Russian infrastructure. The drone strike marked a rare strike on a Ukrainian government building and signals a possible escalation ahead of US‑mediated talks.
Russia’s defence ministry also reported concurrent strikes on a cargo vessel in the port of Chornomorsk and a tanker near Odesa. Analysts note that the new generation of jet‑powered drones offers higher speed and harder interception, raising concerns about future attacks.
US mediators—Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—will visit Moscow and Kyiv next week in ongoing efforts to broker a peace deal. They are scheduled to meet President Vladimir Putin on Saturday in Moscow and then head back to Kyiv to meet President Zelenskiy on Sunday.
The incident underscores the continuing intensity of the conflict and the heightened risks posed by advanced drone capabilities. As Kyiv’s capital faces further assaults, Ukraine’s leadership remains prepared to counter any aggression and to push for diplomatic solutions.
