Mangione Meets Federal Prosecutors Amid Possible Plea Deal

Attorneys for Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will meet federal prosecutors on Friday, setting the stage for a potential plea agreement.

Mangione faces two federal stalking charges that carry life in prison. A plea could influence the court’s decision on the state trial, raising double‑jeopardy concerns in New York.

"There's a conference scheduled for 11 am on Friday, and that's all we can say at this time," said Jamie McDonald, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

A plea deal does not guarantee a final agreement and must be approved by the court before Mangione can enter a new plea. Prosecutors must still decide which charges will be negotiated.

If Mangione pleads guilty in the federal case, his lawyers could argue that the state trial violates double‑jeopardy protections under both federal and the New York state constitution. However, the outcome is uncertain and would depend on how the charges overlap.

State prosecutors may contend that their case is distinct enough to proceed, while the state judge would determine the extent of overlap. The state trial is set for September 8, and the federal case is scheduled for January 2027.
