In brief

Airbnb has revised its house‑rules policy so that hosts can set up to seven standard rules and add other reasonable requests, but can no longer ask guests to strip beds, wash dishes or perform other time‑consuming chores. The changes take effect for bookings from 20 November and respond to frequent guest complaints that cleaning fees should cover such tasks. Hosts may still impose time‑limits in special cases such as water‑reduction measures, and the company will show rules prominently in reservation reminders. Airbnb also notes that it may grant exceptions in limited circumstances and that hosts can appeal flagged requests.

Airbnb has revised its house‑rules policy, limiting what hosts can ask guests to do, most notably removing the right to demand that guests strip beds or wash dishes before leaving.

Under the new guidelines, hosts can set up to seven standard house‑rules and add other reasonable requests. Tasks that require significant effort, such as washing dishes or tidying bed linens, are now prohibited.

The changes apply to all bookings made on or after 20 November, according to the company’s website. Hosts may still request time‑limits in special circumstances, for example if water restrictions are in place.

Airbnb said that policy changes were driven by complaints that guests often had to perform chores that the cleaning fee was supposed to cover. The new rules will highlight house‑rules in reservation reminders and no‑fine policy.

Exceptions to the rule can be granted by Airbnb in limited cases, such as legal requirements or homeowners‑association rules. Hosts can appeal if a request is flagged as violating policy.

The update follows a surge in viral TikTok videos by hosts in Georgia asserting strict cleanliness standards. The company says some of the content was misinterpreted and that the new policy will create a clearer standard.
