# Recovering in the aftermath of the Thusis fire
At just after midnight local time on Friday, the cantonal police received a call that a building in the Alpine town of Thusis had erupted in flames. The facility— a small restaurant that was also an apartment block—was “completely destroyed,” officials said, with five people still unaccounted for and eight others wounded as the fire intensified.
Investigators from Graubünden have found that the blaze began on the second floor and that the fire’s initial spark is still under investigation. Firefighters opened the roof with a crane after a stairwell caved in, a testament to the building’s structural fragility.
A total of roughly 100 firefighters were dispatched from across the region, and they have been working the night into the next day to locate those missing and extract injured residents. Fourteen people managed to leave the building before the fire spread, with two taken to hospitals for serious injuries, two for moderate injuries and four for less severe wounds. The casualties were transported to medical facilities in nearby Chur, Ilanz, Zurich and other towns.
The region, known for its winter sports and summer nature activities, is grappling with the tragedy amid a backdrop of heightened emergency protocols. Police and the public prosecutor’s office are conducting a joint investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which may range from electrical faults to arson.
