In brief

On a calm day in Bimini, Leanne Gregory was swept into a powerful current while snorkeling with her family. She pulled her boys to safety, placing her own life on the line. Despite CPR efforts at the ferry dock, she could not be revived. Her husband, Nathan Gregory, lauded her as an absolute hero and set up a fundraiser for their children’s future. The Royal Bahamas Police confirmed the tragedy and ruled foul play unlikely.

A British mother lost her life off the island of Bimini in the Bahamas after bravely attempting to rescue two sons who were carried away by a sudden, strong current.

Leanne Gregory, 36, was snorkeling with her family when a powerful surge swept the boys out near the North Bimini Ferry Dock. She clung to them, dragging them to shore before she was overwhelmed by the water and later pronounced dead at a local clinic.

Her husband, Nathan Gregory, expressed profound grief in a Facebook post, calling her the most amazing wife, mother and friend anyone could meet. He praised her as an "absolute hero" and praised the strength that held their family together.

Police officials confirmed that emergency responders applied CPR to her at the docks, but her injuries proved fatal. An autopsy will be conducted, and no foul play is suspected. The Foreign Office has offered support to the family.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can arise even during family leisure activities on the open sea.
