In brief

A pair of hikers exploring the picturesque foothills of the Krkonose Mountains stumbled upon an astounding discovery this past February. While wandering through the area, they spotted a shiny object amidst a stone wall. Upon further investigation, they uncovered an aluminum can that held a remarkable bounty: 598 gold coins neatly arranged and wrapped in black fabric. Miroslav Novak, the head of the archaeological department at the Museum of Eastern Bohemia, confirmed the treasure’s fate, stating that the museum has since taken control of the intriguing find.

Nearby, the hikers unearthed an additional treasure trove within a metal box that contained various gold artifacts, including 16 ornate snuffboxes, 10 elegant bracelets, a decorative comb, a chain with a small key, and a powder compact. The total assessed value of these items is estimated to be around $680,000, making it both a substantial find and a historical curiosity. Dr. Novak estimates the gold coins alone are worth approximately 7.5 million Czech Koruna, or about $340,000, while the valuation for the additional gold items could match this amount if confirmed to be solid gold. What has energized historians and treasure hunters alike is the relatively recent date of the buried items. Unlike typical archaeological discoveries in the region which often date back to the Bronze Age or medieval times, the latest coin in this newfound collection hails from 1921. This indicates that the treasure must have been concealed within the last century, igniting a frenzy of speculation about who might have buried such a fortune and why it was hidden away. As investigations continue, the mystery of this remarkable treasure hunt deepens, inviting amateur sleuths and historians to piece together the story behind the riches.
