In brief

On Thursday, Yemeni military forces reported airstrikes and ground clashes against Houthi rebels in Ibb, Taiz and Lahj. An airstrike on a Houthi missile launcher destroyed the weapon, and additional strikes targeted Houthi positions, causing civilian and military casualties. The clashes are part of the “Dawn of Yemen” operation, which has intensified fighting and displaced thousands since July.

Yemen’s government forces announced on Thursday that they had carried out a series of airstrikes and ground clashes against Houthi rebels, according to reports from Al‑Jumhuriya TV and Aden TV. The operations, part of the “Dawn of Yemen” campaign begun on Oct. 5, spanned the Ibb, Taiz and Lahj provinces, officials said.

In Ibb province, an airstrike hit a Houthi missile launcher on Mount Ba’dan, destroying the vehicle and the weapon. This strike marked the second attack on the region in less than 24 hours, the channel said.

In the Taiz province, airstrikes were reported on the outskirts of the villages of al‑Sarari and Dhi al‑Barah, southeast of Mount Saber. A separate missile strike on the al‑Athawir area of the Hayfan district killed or injured eight civilians, including children, according to an Aden TV account.

Meanwhile, in Lahj province, Aden TV covered ongoing clashes in the Maqaterah, al‑Sawalah and al‑Zariq areas. Forces from the Fourth Military Region struck a Houthi vehicle carrying a 23 mm anti‑aircraft gun on the Maqaterah front, demolishing both the vehicle and the weapon, the channel reported. The same report said that dozens of Houthi fighters killed or wounded during the Maqaterah clashes had been transported to Khalifa Hospital in the city of Turbah.

Additional airstrikes targeted Houthi reinforcements in Naqil al‑Saha, also in Maqaterah. Over the course of the day, Yemeni armed forces carried out 322 operations, the report said, killing 64 Houthi fighters and destroying or disabling 16 military vehicles.

Officials said that fighting between government forces and Houthi rebels has resumed since July, a lull that had followed a period of relatively calm since April 2022. UN reports noted that the ongoing civil war has displaced more than 250,000 people since last July and has killed and wounded thousands, exacerbating the country’s humanitarian crisis.

The Houthis seized Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014, prompting Saudi‑led coalition intervention in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government. The current operation seeks to regain control over state institutions and to recapture the capital from Houthi influence.
