In brief

A North‑bound sedan was struck by a east‑bound freight truck and then by a second truck on a highway 320 kilometres from Sydney. The driver and passenger died at the scene. Police said the two truck drivers were unharmed and were taken to hospital for mandatory drugs and alcohol testing. The incident added to a sharp rise in road deaths in the state this year.

A North‑bound sedan was struck by a heavy freight truck and then by a second truck on a rural highway about 320 kilometres northwest of Sydney on Tuesday night, killing the driver and passenger at the scene, police said.

Emergency services were called to the New South Wales highway around 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the New South Wales Police Force. The sedan collided first with a southbound freight truck that was carrying cargo on the main highway.

After the initial impact, the sedan was then struck by a second freight truck travelling in the same direction. The driver, a man, and the passenger, a woman, died where they were found by the responding officers.

Neither of the heavy freight truck drivers suffered injuries, but the police said both were taken to hospital for mandatory drugs and alcohol testing in accordance with routine road‑traffic procedures.

In a statement released the following day, the police force urged motorists to slow down and exercise caution amid a worrying spike in road deaths across the state. According to the police, there were nine fatalities in eight crashes during the week ending on Monday, and a further three deaths were recorded in two separate crashes on Tuesday.

New South Wales officials said that as of Monday, there had been 289 road‑related deaths in the state so far in 2026, up from 282 at the same point in the previous year. The incident has been cited as a tragic reminder of the need for heightened road safety measures during evening hours.
