In brief
Russian forces carried out a missile attack on Kyiv on Saturday, damaging residential structures and injuring two civilians. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko described the debris and the impact on a kindergarten building, while President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of rising infrastructure attacks. The incident came amid escalating tensions just days before planned U.S.-led talks in Abu Dhabi.
Russian forces carried out a missile strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Saturday, damaging several residential buildings and injuring two civilians, officials reported.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who has been vocal about the city’s security situation, said the blast hit a five‑storey apartment block in the western district and also damaged the façade of another household. He added that the city’s military administration had warned residents that the missile strike could be the first of a series of attacks.
Two people were treated for injuries and a building that housed a kindergarten sustained damage, the mayor’s office said on its Telegram channel. The wounded residents were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In a live video address later that evening, President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned that the Kremlin was preparing new attacks on energy targets, bridges, and other key infrastructure. He urged Ukrainian citizens to stay alert and reinforced that the government was seeking guarantees from Western allies on post‑war security guarantees.
Klitschko’s comments appeared on Telegram the same night: "Explosions in the Kyiv suburbs. The enemy is hitting infrastructure with ballistic missiles."
Official Reactions and Upcoming Talks
The strike came three days before U.S.-led talks were scheduled to open in Abu Dhabi to seek a resolution to the four‑year conflict. The city’s officials warned that more strikes could occur while security guarantees were being negotiated with the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the European Union.
The upcoming talks have been discussed in Brussels, where Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov highlighted the focus on post‑war reconstruction, funding and security guarantees that could shape the post‑war era.
While the missile attack reinforced the urgency of the diplomatic mission, officials from Kyiv’s military administration said they would continue to monitor the situation closely and prepare for potential further attacks.
