A helicopter carrying a pilot and five Hindu pilgrims crashed near Chayee village in Uttarakhand on Friday, 30 October 2026, according to Xinhua. The crash was reported the following day, with all six occupants feared dead.

The aircraft took off from Badrinath, a pilgrimage town in the state’s northern Himalayas, at about 1:14 p.m. local time. A flight‑debrief from the district administration says the helicopter lost contact near the Hathi Parvat area, a mountainous region on the route.

Within minutes of the loss of contact officials launched an immediate search. The district administration, the state disaster management department, and the Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force coordinated a joint response, according to a statement by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami posted to social media.

Air rescue crews deployed a second helicopter to conduct an aerial search for the missing aircraft. Witnesses in the area observed smoke rising from the Hathi Parvat vicinity shortly after the crash, confirming the aircraft’s sudden loss.

Chief Minister Dhami’s statement highlighted the use of a joint rescue operation, underscoring the urgency of the operation in the difficult terrain near Chayee village, located roughly 290 kilometres northeast of Dehradun, Uttarakhand’s capital.

Rescue Operation in Rugged Terrain

Rescue teams have faced significant challenges due to the region’s steep mountains and ongoing snowfall. The terrain around Chayee village is known for its ruggedness, which complicates ground searches and the placement of heavy equipment.

State disaster authorities reported that paratroopers and mountain rescue units are on the ground, working in shifts to locate the wreckage and conduct a body recovery. Air support remains operational, providing both surveillance and transport for medical supplies.

Past Pilgrimage Route Accidents

The incident comes months after a series of similar helicopter tragedies on pilgrimage routes in Uttarakhand. BBC coverage of a June 2025 accident noted that seven people died when a helicopter carrying pilgrims crashed near Kedarnath. Another crash on the same pilgrimage path had resulted in seven fatalities, according to BBC reports.

These earlier accidents highlighted the vulnerability of vehicular and aerial transport in the high‑altitude corridors that serve pilgrims visiting sacred sites in the Himalayas. Authorities in the region have since been urged to improve safety measures and emergency response protocols.

The Uttarakhand government has stated that it will investigate the crash causes, including mechanical failure, weather conditions, and potential pilot decisions. Officials are also reviewing flight certification and maintenance logs for the aircraft.

The loss has prompted a broad reaction from the local community, with prayers offered for the deceased pilgrims. Social media posts from local groups show condolences and expressions of solidarity amid the ongoing search and recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, the region’s tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure have been temporarily interrupted as transport routes remain closed amid heavy snow. Local authorities are working to restore access to key pilgrimage sites as soon as conditions allow.

At this time, the Uttarakhand deputy chief minister emphasized that all possible resources would be directed toward the search, hoping for a swift conclusion to the rescue operation. Official updates are expected as the situation develops.
