In brief
A new AP-NORC poll reveals that a majority of Americans now view legal immigration as a major benefit, acknowledging its positive impact on the economy and American companies. This shift in perspective comes despite increasing restrictions under the Trump administration, highlighting a complex sentiment concerning immigration.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Amidst new immigration restrictions from President Trump’s administration, a new poll shows increased belief among U.S. adults in the benefits of legal immigration. According to an AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey, Americans are now more likely to recognize legal immigrants as a significant contributor to economic growth and skilled labor acquisition.
The survey highlighted that perceptions around legal immigration have become more favorable compared to earlier this year. Less than half of respondents advocate for reducing the number of legal immigrants, a slight decline from early 2024.
Despite this growing acceptance of legal immigration, concerns surrounding illegal immigration remain entrenched. Americans still express skepticism regarding the contributions of individuals who enter the U.S. illegally, often associating that demographic with potential criminal activity.
While Trump's administration has prioritized stringent measures against illegal immigration, including a tightening of processes for legal immigrants, the public's perception of immigrants’ contributions has notably shifted toward a more positive view. For example, roughly 60% of Americans currently see a major benefit in the contributions of legal immigrants to the economy, an increase from 40% last year.
As the immigration debate continues, participants in the survey demonstrate a significant divide in opinions based on political affiliations. More Republicans now oppose reducing legal immigration, with a marked decrease from 45% to approximately 30% expressing the desire for reductions.
Furthermore, the cultural impacts of immigration are also recognized, with many asserting that immigrants enrich American values and culture. This has led to calls for easing processes for legal immigration.
However, the narrative around illegal immigration has remained largely unchanged. Many Americans still believe that illegal immigrants pose risks, particularly concerning welfare and job safety. The poll underlines the complexity of public opinion on immigration, reflecting a growing appreciation for the economic and cultural contributions of those who enter the U.S. legally.
