In brief

The Nobel Peace Prize 2024 has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a group of atomic bomb survivors advocating for nuclear disarmament.

Toshiyuki Mimaki, chairman of Nihon Hidankyo, has realized a profound dream as the collective of Japanese atomic bomb survivors was awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. This honor is in recognition of their relentless efforts to advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons. More than 100,000 survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, bearing witness to unimaginable horrors and suffering, continue to live with the memory of the devastations inflicted upon their cities. According to Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, these survivors have spent decades demonstrating, through their testimonies, why nuclear weapons must never be used again. This award signifies not just a moment of reckoning, but a call for a future free from nuclear threats.
