In brief

On Oct. 16, an Egyptian fishing vessel inadvertently entered Saudi waters, leading to the detention of its nine crew in Tabuk. Following diplomatic efforts, the vessel departed Tabuk with supplies and is returning to Egypt. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry urges compliance with maritime regulations to prevent future incidents.

An Egyptian fishing vessel and a crew of nine were released from detention in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk region after an accidental incursion into Saudi waters on Oct. 16, Xinhua reported. The vessel, Mohamed Abu al‑Azaim, had been seized by Saudi authorities for the unauthorized entry.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced that diplomatic talks with Saudi officials facilitated the crew’s release and the vessel’s departure from the Red Sea port of Tabuk. The ministry said the boat was refueled and supplied with food and essential provisions for its journey home.

During the detention, the nine fishermen were kept at a Saudi detention facility and were not allowed to leave until formal negotiations assured their safe return. The ministry stated that the incident was caused by a navigational error and that the crew had no intention of violating sovereign waters.

In a statement, the ministry urged Egyptian fishermen and small‑boat operators to strictly observe maritime navigation rules and obtain the necessary permits before entering neighboring countries’ territorial waters. Officials warned that future incidents could result in legal consequences and threaten fishermen’s safety.

The vessel departed Tabuk on Friday with all nine crew on board, heading toward Egypt as per the ministry’s updates. Reports from the Egyptian Gazette confirm that the boat was provided with fuel and food, ensuring a safe transit back to Egyptian waters. The Gazette’s brief coverage echoed the ministry’s narrative about the diplomatic resolution.

While the Egyptian government praised the swift release, both Saudi and Egyptian officials noted that the incident underscores the importance of clear navigation protocols in the Red Sea region. The ministry’s spokesperson mentioned that cooperation between the two nations was essential in achieving a peaceful outcome.
