On 8 October, students, survivors and advocacy groups marched in more than 40 U.S. states, demanding a definitive end to sexual violence after a newspaper lawsuit alleged that members of Cornell University’s Chi Phi fraternity drugged and assaulted a student, named Jane Doe, while she was incapacitated.
The lawsuit accuses the university of failing to investigate the assault properly and of insufficiently disciplining the involved fraternity brothers. In response, New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed the state’s attorney general as a special prosecutor after the case was reopened by local prosecutors.
The protests featured vigils, speeches, and large crowds in city centers and on college campuses, with demonstrators calling for stronger policies, clearer reporting mechanisms, and national reforms aimed at preventing sexual violence. Student leaders say these demonstrations are part of a broader push to hold higher‑education institutions accountable for safety and transparency.
