Two injured after stabbing at Edmonton Sikh temple

A man has been arrested after two people were injured in an early‑morning stabbing attack at a Sikh temple in Edmonton, Canada, police said.

The violence broke out inside the sprawling Nanaksar Gurdwara around 05:00 local time on Friday (12:00 BST), a time when only a few worshippers were present. Authorities have not named the suspect or revealed a motive.

The attack follows police confirmation of threatening calls to two Sikh gurdwaras in Calgary, two hours south of Edmonton, last week. Investigators are looking for any link between the threats and the stabbing.

The World Sikh Organization, headquartered in Canada, condemned the incident as deeply troubling, noting that the attacker entered the temple and targeted individuals on the premises. They also reported that a Sikh scripture was reportedly desecrated during the confrontation.

The Gurdwara remains closed to the public as police continue the investigation. The police chief warned that they were on scene and would keep the public informed.

Calgary’s mayor, Jeromy Farkas, condemned the threats made to his city’s Sikh places of worship. In a social media post, he described the threats as “utterly disgusting” and reiterated that gurdwaras welcome everyone and embody hospitality and generosity.
