Utah Firefighter and Family Killed in Flash Flood

Five members of a Utah family were killed in a flash flood over the weekend after hiking in the southern part of the state. The victims included fire captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their three sons. A daughter who did not join the outing is the only family member who survived.

It is believed the family fell victim to flooding caused by heavy rains, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s statement did not name those who were killed, but identification came from Provo Fire & Rescue, which announced the death of Captain Spencer Long.

Provo Fire & Rescue expressed its sorrow: "We are absolutely heart‑broken by the death of Captain Spencer Long and his family. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time."

A GoFundMe page links the sheriff’s statement with the fire department and lists the deceased as Long, his wife Katrina and their sons Reid, Thayne and Gage. It also notes their daughter’s life was forever changed in an instant.

The family arrived at a campground near Bicknell on Friday for a day trip. Officials were called to the site around 17:00 local time (23:00 GMT), finding a young male victim deceased. Additional male victims were recovered during the search.

Rescue workers resumed the search on Saturday, later confirming the remaining two individuals were also found dead. The entire incident underscores the sudden danger of flash floods during heavy rainfall.

Local authorities urge hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to monitor weather alerts when planning trips. The community mourns the loss of five lives and has united in support for the affected family.
