In brief

A 39‑year‑old gunman, Kevin T, opened fire from his car in Trappes, killing one and injuring five, targeting people of migrant origin. French authorities have placed him under psychiatric observation for up to 48 hours while they evaluate his fitness for trial. Blood tests revealed cannabis and cocaine, and investigators found a Bible, a Quran and an ad‑hitler manifesto at his home. President Macron called the attack a “racist terrorist attack,” and the victim, 26‑year‑old Pengo Bossio Wangi, was a respected mixed‑martial‑arts fighter whose club paid tribute. The incident has heightened debate over the use of psychiatric detention in criminal investigations.

A 39‑year‑old gunman, identified as Kevin T, opened fire from his car in the western Paris suburb of Trappes before moving to nearby La Verrière, killing one person and injuring five. French anti‑terrorism officials have now placed him under psychiatric observation to assess whether he is fit for interrogation.

The attack appeared to target people of migrant origin. President Emmanuel Macron characterised the incident as a “racist terrorist attack,” warning that the victims were chosen “over their skin colour or religion.”

The National Anti‑Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) said the move follows a psychiatric expert’s recommendation and that the suspect would remain in a police psychiatric unit for roughly 48 hours. Blood tests later revealed cannabis and cocaine in his system.

Investigators also uncovered a Bible, a Quran and a copy of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf at the suspect’s home, according to Le Monde.

The victim, 26‑year‑old French‑Congolese mixed‑martial‑arts fighter Pengo Bossio Wangi, was praised by his club for his generosity and leadership. His death has left the community in mourning.

Among the wounded, a 12‑year‑old girl remains in critical condition, while another injured resident has recovered. The mayor of La Verrière reported that the girl’s mother has confirmed improvement, though her condition is still serious.

The suspect was previously known to the police but not to France’s intelligence services; he had four prior convictions that were automatically expunged. Firearms records suggest he used an old semi‑automatic weapon, firing bursts from the car’s windows.

The decision to detain the suspect for psychiatric observation has sparked debate among legal experts and the families affected.
