In brief

A Ukrainian drone attack overnight on St Petersburg struck the city’s main oil terminal, the Ruchyi depot and a key logistics centre, killing one person and injuring at least five. Governor Alexander Beglov reported active fires and damage to 12 apartment blocks and two homes, while the airport was briefly closed. The strike follows Ukraine’s pause and subsequent resumption of attacks on Russian energy infrastructure ahead of the winter, amid diplomatic friction over a US‑Russia diesel deal and the broader war economy.

At least one person was killed and several key oil facilities were damaged when Ukrainian drones struck St Petersburg overnight.

The regional governor said fires were being extinguished at the St Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Ruchyi oil depot as a secondary blast caused a fire at a logistics centre owned by Ozon, Russia’s Amazon. Five men were reported injured, though Ozon confirmed no casualties after staff were evacuated.

VKontakte’s data centre was also hit, and the social media firm assured users that services were largely unaffected after an early‑morning outage.

The strike occurs as Ukraine has resumed drone‑based attacks on Russian energy sites, a move it says undermines Moscow’s war economy while a pause had been observed three days prior to a stance against Donald Trump’s recent ‘energy ceasefire’ deal. President Zelenskyur telephoned U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Saturday, signalling ongoing diplomatic negotiations.

  • 12 apartment blocks and two homes were hit across the city.
  • Pulkovo Airport was temporarily shut down.
  • Mobile internet service may have been disrupted.
  • Russia’s defence ministry reported it intercepted over 1,000 Ukrainian drones overnight.

With Ukrainian focus on energy infrastructure ramped up, UN reports indicate the early October period has been the deadliest for civilians in Ukraine in recent years, and Russian strikes have left hundreds of thousands without power as a harsh winter approaches.
