Jayden Adams, a 25‑year‑old midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team, died unexpectedly. The death followed his participation in all three group matches of the 2026 World Cup. South Africa’s sports minister and the South African Football Players Union issued statements mourning the loss. South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie expressed deep shock and said the country mourns alongside Adams’ family, teammates and fans. He urged restraint from speculation while an investigation into the cause of death continues.

The South African Football Players Union announced its devastation over the untimely death, noting Adams had only recently represented his country, carrying the nation’s hopes at the World Cup. The union said it was an immeasurable loss to the football fraternity and the country at large.

A police investigation is underway after Adams’ body was found in Schotschekloof, Cape Town. No official cause of death has yet been confirmed.
