Rare Amur Tiger Umit Released in Kazakhstan After 70 Years

Kazakhstan's Ile‑Balkhash Nature Reserve welcomed Umit, a female Amur tiger, last week— the first tiger north of the Aral Sea in half a century.

Umit was carefully transferred from Russia as part of a larger reintroduction programme aimed at restoring the species, once widespread across Central Asia but driven to local extinction by the early 1900s.

The reserve's wildlife experts will monitor Umit’s adaptation, hunting behaviour, and health in this new habitat before deciding whether to release the remaining three tigers that joined the programme.

The release signals renewed hope for the Amur tiger, which survives in small pockets in Russia and China, and could become a flagship species for conservation in the region.
