In brief
Despite U.S. pressure, Israel's aid deliveries to Gaza remain critically low, with food and medical supplies hitting record lows since the October 7 attacks. The Biden administration has issued a warning to Israel for immediate action to avoid military assistance cuts.
Despite a firm warning from the Biden administration, aid deliveries to Gaza remain significantly below what is necessary to meet the needs of its population. On October 13, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken sent a letter to Israeli officials, urging them to increase the flow of aid within 30 days, threatening a possible cutoff of military assistance if they do not comply. The letter noted that aid shipments in September had plummeted to the lowest levels observed since Hamas launched its attacks on October 7, 2023.Reports indicate a slight increase in the number of trucks entering Gaza in recent weeks; however, total aid and commercial goods entering the region since the U.S. warning remains far below the levels needed to address the crisis. On the eve of the deadline, Israel announced some policy changes aimed at facilitating aid but ultimately has not complied with U.S. demands regarding the volume of support.A spokesperson for the State Department, Vedant Patel, stated that although Israel has begun implementing important changes, “more progress” is still necessary. He emphasized that the administration does not currently view Israel as violating any U.S. laws in this matter. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been exacerbated since the Israeli government decided to block commercial activities within the territory, claiming that Hamas was profiting from such trade. This has coincided with an ongoing military offensive against Hamas in North Gaza, resulting in mass displacement and heightened suffering for the civilian population. As the conflict continues, many advocate for the urgent need to address and rectify the imbalance in aid deliveries to avert further humanitarian consequences.
