In brief

Christina Block, heir to a famed German steakhouse chain, stands accused of orchestrating an Israeli security firm’s abduction of her children from Denmark during a custody battle. The case has exposed deep ties to former German and Israeli intelligence, leading to the arrest of former head of German foreign intelligence, August Hanning, on treason charges. Investigations revealed the children were taken at New Year’s 2023‑24 celebrations, transported across the border in a campervan, and handed to Block in Hamburg. While Block denies knowledge of the plot, prosecutors cite testimony that she and her lawyer were fully aware. The trial has faced multiple delays, yet remains a focal point of European media, highlighting the blurred lines between family disputes and espionage.

Trial of German steakhouse heiress sparks espionage scandal

Christina Block

Christina Block, the multimillion‑rich heir to a chain of German steakhouses, stands accused of ordering an Israeli security team to abduct her children from Denmark amid a bitter custody dispute.

The case, which has captivated Germany, also opened a Pandora’s box of spy‑craft, linking former German and Israeli secret agents to the operation and leading to the arrest of former German intelligence chief August Hanning on treason charges.

Investigators say the abduction occurred during the New Year celebrations of 2023‑24, with four men plundering the children away from their father in Denmark, dragging them into a car, and transporting them across the German border in a campervan before handing them over to Block in Hamburg on 2 January 2024.

Block, her lawyer Andreas Costard, and an Israeli operative known only as Jonathan G face charges of minor abduction, bodily harm and unlawful detention; the former TV presenter Gerhard Delling and three others are accused of assisting.

While Block maintains she was unaware of the plot and claims the Israeli team acted independently, prosecutors point to testimony from Israeli security chief David Barkay that Block and Costard were fully aware of the plan.

Parallel investigations have implicated Hanning, whose alleged role in an earlier attempted return of the children from Denmark in 2022 now fuels speculation that state secrets may have been sold to unknown foreign powers.

The trial has gone through multiple postponements, most recently due to a key witness’s failure to appear, but the underlying espionage concerns continue to dominate media coverage across Europe.
