Germany Probes Russian Links to Woodland Weapons Cache
German security services have opened an investigation into a cache of handguns discovered in a wooded area on the outskirts of Berlin. Intelligence agencies believe the weapons were intended to facilitate targeted killings ordered by Russian authorities.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed that federal prosecutors are also examining a suspect currently detained in Romania on suspicions of espionage and an alleged parcel‑bomb plot. The suspect is described as a low‑level agent and is being evaluated for possible extradition.
In October, German domestic intelligence first identified the potential weapons stash, which had two handguns and accompanying ammunition. The arsenal was rendered inoperable and subsequently placed under surveillance, though no movement was noted.
Dobrindt emphasized that the case reflects a “high threat level” within the country, citing ongoing warnings that Russian intelligence services may target German defence industry executives or political exiles. The investigation follows earlier accusations of Russian plots against German officials and the 2020 murder of a Russian national in Berlin ordered by Moscow.
Sources indicate that similar operatives have been detained this year, including an individual from Kazakhstan, underscoring the broader scope of Russian‑linked covert activities in Germany.
