ANN ARBOR, Mich. — After spending two nights in jail, fired Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was expected to be arraigned Friday amid an ongoing police investigation of an alleged assault. Moore, 39, was terminated on Wednesday by the University of Michigan for what they described as an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Hours after his dismissal, Moore was in police custody.
Authorities have not disclosed specific details regarding his arrest; however, they mentioned he was held at the Washtenaw County Jail and remained under investigation. According to a statement from Pittsfield Township police, officers responded to an alleged assault report and took a person into custody without naming either party involved — a response to media inquiries focused on Moore.
The university, which has not revealed specifics about the alleged relationship, described the findings of their investigation as credible. Moore, a father of three and married, was said to have committed a clear violation of university policy, according to Athletic Director Warde Manuel.
Moore, the former offensive coordinator, was elevated to head coach following the team's national title win. He had signed a five-year contract worth $5.5 million annually last year, but since he was fired for cause, the university is not liable for the remaining contract terms.
With an uncertain future, Michigan is preparing to play No. 14 Texas on December 31 in the Citrus Bowl, with Biff Poggi stepping in as interim coach after filling in during Moore’s earlier suspension associated with a previous scandal. The coaching shakeup could lead to player transfers and hesitance from donors amid the program's challenges.
