Former Liberian Vice President Faces Drug‑Trafficking Charges
Jewel Howard‑Taylor, who served as Liberia’s vice‑president from 2018 to 2024, has been formally charged with drug trafficking, money‑laundering, and related offences by the Justice Ministry. She was seized at Roberts International Airport just before a scheduled flight out of the country. No public statement from the former lawmaker has yet been issued.
In recent years Liberia has intensified its war‑on‑drug stance, particularly targeting cocaine smuggling from South America to Europe. Howard‑Taylor is accused of illegally importing, selling, and moving controlled substances while helping to facilitate the operations of a drug‑trafficking network. Police also named three foreign nationals, two Croatians and a Ukrainian, who are allegedly part of the same ring.
The investigation reflects the new administration’s pledge to curb corruption and secure the nation against becoming a drug transit hub. Recent seizures, some of the largest on record, underscore the gravity of the crackdown.
With Liberia’s political environment marred by allegations of mismanagement under former President George Weah, the current leadership under President Joseph Boakai has emphasised the need to protect the country from illicit trade.
