Canadian officials are conducting a month‑long investigation while emergency departments were overwhelmed by the influx of patients. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canadian forces.

An unanticipated blaze on Saturday roared through a training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, moving almost a kilometre in under sixty seconds. The fire claimed four soldiers and left dozens more wounded, with 19 of the injured in critical condition.

Counter forces commander Maj‑Gen Wade Rutland said the speed of the blaze was extraordinary, noting that a fire a kilometre away appeared only half a minute later. Armed forces officials have ruled out terrorism and announced an investigation that could take a month.

Wind warnings for gusts up to 90 km per hour were in force that day, which likely fed the fire’s rapid spread. The tragedy is one of the worst peacetime incidents for Canadian soldiers in recent memory, Prime Minister Mark Carney called.

Families and comrades are still mourning the loss of Sgt Morgan Wong, Pte Shaun Farrell, Pte Aidan Goulding and Pte Hayden Lykkemark, with tributes pouring in from their regiment and supporters.

Authorities continue to oversee emergency medical responses at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Wainwright, which was overwhelmed by the influx of patients after the crash.
