Explosion rocks Bolivia military barracks, killing at least two

A powerful detonation at a Bolivian artillery barracks in Viacha on Friday sent shockwaves through the region, claiming at least two lives and leaving dozens wounded, according to military reports.

"At least 81 people were injured," Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano announced at 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT). Seven personnel remain missing while emergency teams work to clear debris and assess further hazards.

Health official Rita Nebraska told local television that about 10 to 15 people were believed to have died in the incident. She also warned of a potential secondary explosion, urging civilians to stay at a safe distance of at least 150 m from the base.

Police spokesman Roger Roca said that fireworks had been stored at the barracks and the cause of the blast remains under investigation, highlighting the need for a thorough, transparent inquiry.

Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz expressed his deepest solidarity with the families affected and pledged a comprehensive investigation into the events.

"We will uncover the truth and ensure accountability," the President said on social media.

Local authorities in Viacha declared a three‑day period of mourning following the tragedy. The explosion also caused structural damage to several nearby homes, prompting a rapid response from rescue services.
