WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has pardoned former New York Mets star Darryl Strawberry for tax evasion and drug charges, acknowledging his profound transformation through faith and years of sobriety.
Strawberry, who was an outfielder and eight-time All-Star, is remembered for his outstanding baseball career that included hitting 335 homers and achieving over 1,000 RBIs during his 17 seasons in Major League Baseball. However, he faced numerous challenges later in his life, including legal battles and health issues.
In 1995, Strawberry pleaded guilty to a felony for failing to report substantial income, leading to significant financial repercussions. After enduring health crises, including a colon cancer diagnosis, he continued to grapple with personal issues, including substance abuse.
Despite these challenges, Strawberry has turned his life around, actively engaging in ministry and maintaining his sobriety for over a decade. Recently, he expressed gratitude for the presidential pardon, posting on Instagram to thank Trump for helping him move forward in life.
Strawberry described the moment he received the call from President Trump as life-changing, and he emphasized that this act of kindness was more about compassion and friendship than politics. He reflected on how this pivotal experience has reinforced his commitment to faith and recovery, allowing him to serve others in a meaningful way.
Overall, the pardon recognizes not just a past error but also a profound journey of renewal and service, highlighting Strawberry's dedication to his Christian faith and recovery efforts.
