A 26‑year‑old British visitor who stole a denim jacket at Changi Airport is now facing charges after authorities finally apprehended him in transit.

A 26‑year‑old Briton allegedly stole a £202 denim jacket from a store in Singapore’s Changi Airport on 14 August 2024. The theft went unnoticed until evening surveillance footage revealed the crime. Two years on, the man was arrested while in transit at the airport and charged with theft. Singapore Police emphasised that offenders cannot rely on leaving the country to evade capture and highlighted recent similar arrests. Theft cases in Singapore can carry up to seven years’ imprisonment.

A 26‑year‑old man from the United Kingdom was charged with theft after allegedly removing a blue denim jacket from a display at an airport shop and leaving without paying. The incident was first reported on 14 August 2024 when an assistant noticed a missing item from a mannequin and turned to security cameras.

Video footage captured the suspect taking the jacket valued at about S$350 (US$275, £202) and exiting the store. By the time police identified him, he had already departed Singapore’s borders.

The suspect was apprehended in transit at Changi Airport.

The man was arrested on 15 August at the airport’s transit area and formally charged on Tuesday. According to the Singapore Police Force, “the police take a serious stance on shop theft and will deal firmly with offenders in accordance with the law.” The statement stressed that “offenders should not assume that they can evade detection simply by leaving Singapore after committing an offence.”

The stolen item was a blue denim jacket.

The police release also highlighted a recent case involving a 50‑year‑old Polish woman who was arrested for stealing two perfume bottles from a terminal shop on 11 June and charged at the same transit point before departure. Singapore’s penalty for theft ranges up to seven years in prison.

The arrest underscores Singapore’s rigorous approach to travel security and its readiness to prosecute theft, even when the suspect has left the country within months of the offence.
