In brief

Two Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Sunday killed eight Palestinians, five of whom were police officers, sources said. Medical clinics and Hamas‑run authorities confirmed the casualties, while Gaza health officials added the figures to a growing toll that began with the October 2025 ceasefire.

At least eight Palestinians, including five police officers, were killed Sunday in two Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, Xinhua reported, highlighting the continued violence even after the ceasefire that took effect in October 2025.

Local sources said an Israeli drone fired a missile at a group of Palestinians and police personnel in the al‑Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The strike targeted a cluster of civilians and police volunteers who were “performing routine duties,” the police governorate confirmed.

The Nasser Medical Complex, a clinic that operates in Gaza, said that at least five people died and several others were wounded, some seriously, during the attack near Khan Younis. The clinic noted injuries that included shrapnel wounds and blast concussions.

Hamas‑run interior authorities in Gaza confirmed that five members of the General Directorate of Police were killed in al‑Mawasi. They said the attackers “diverted essential policing services.” The authorities added that since the ceasefire was enacted in October 2025, 75 police officers have been killed in Israeli operations.

In a separate incident, medical sources reported that an Israeli air strike targeted a gathering in the al‑Rimal neighborhood, west of Gaza City, killing three Palestinians – one of them a child – and wounding six others, some critically. The attack was described as “aimed at a civilian crowd that was not part of a military target.”

Gaza health authorities recorded 1,580 Palestinians killed and 5,711 wounded in the enclave since the ceasefire took effect. These figures add to a growing toll that has been reported by multiple agencies.

The cumulative toll since the war’s outbreak on 7 October 2023 totals 74,594 dead and 175,834 wounded, statistics that the international community has repeatedly cited.

The Israeli military confirmed “no immediate comment” on the two airstrikes, a silence that has prompted calls from human rights organisations for a full investigation into whether the strikes complied with international law.

These events underscore an increase in casualties that has been seen as disproportionate to the limited escalation occurring on the ground, sources noted.

Local and Palestinian medical sources continued to monitor the numbers after the strikes, warning that the death toll could rise as medical teams triage wounded patients in the region.

The strike reports and casualty figures fed into a broader discussion about the humanitarian impact of ongoing air operations, officials said, as Gaza’s health system grapples with the chronic strain of the conflict.
