In brief

At least 25 people were killed in violent confrontations between Sunni and Shiite factions in Kurram, Pakistan, following a deadly ambush on Shiite convoys. The region has a long history of sectarian strife, exacerbated by a significant Shiite population amid a predominantly Sunni demographic.

Violent unrest erupted overnight in northwestern Pakistan, specifically in Kurram, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, resulting in the deaths of at least 25 individuals. The clashes broke out after a day marked by an ambush that claimed 42 lives, all Shia, during which gunmen attacked vehicles in the area, underscoring the deepening sectarian violence.Kurram is a mountainous district along the Afghan border, home to around 800,000 people, nearly half of whom belong to the Shiite sect. This demographic composition has fostered ongoing tensions between Sunni and Shiite communities. Reports indicate that the violence ignited on Friday afternoon in neighborhoods where these two groups reside in close proximity.Muhammad Shoaib, a local from a Sunni-majority town, described how heavily armed factions from opposing sects descended upon the primary market, torching numerous shops and homes. "For hours on that night, heavy gunfire was exchanged between both sides, with large weapons being used freely," he recounted, having temporarily relocated his family due to the escalating hostilities. "We knew that there would be a retaliatory attack," he added. "It’s a cycle of violence that we have been witnessing and suffering for years now." The retaliatory nature of the events indicates a relentless cycle of sectarian conflict that continues to plague the region, as local residents brace for further violence in the wake of these tragic incidents.
