A 22‑year‑old man from Western Australia was charged by authorities with preparing for a terrorist attack, a statement from the WA Joint Counter Terrorism Team released on Tuesday announced. The team, which is composed of officers from the state police, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, said the suspect was first arrested in December 2025 and charged with nine offences. Subsequent investigations led to an additional charge for other acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts.

The WA Joint Counter Terrorism Team said the investigation remains ongoing. In court the case will be alleged that the man sought assistance on messaging platforms on subjects such as explosive devices, military and tactical training, weapons manufacturing, combat techniques and fake documents – all of which were tied to planning for a terrorist attack.

The alleged planner faced a maximum penalty of life imprisonment should he be convicted, according to the team’s statement. The charges extend the man’s legal risk beyond the original nine offences, the statement emphasised.

According to Xinhua, the charges were brought by the joint team after the suspect’s December arrest, citing the new plans uncovered during further inquiries. Xinhua reported that the team’s findings were presented to the court and that the case is still under investigation.

The team’s interim announcement confirmed that the suspect’s intentions involved requesting guidance on how to acquire or build explosive materials and create falsified documentation, both of which are typical components in planning a terrorist incident. They also mentioned the suspect’s use of digital messaging platforms to seek this advice.

Local police spokespersons have not given additional comments beyond the Xinhua release, and the case has not yet moved to trial. As the investigation continues, officials indicate that evidence is still being gathered and that further charges could be considered.

In the broader context, Western Australia’s counter‑terrorism agencies have been active in monitoring online threats. The WA Joint Counter Terrorism Team has highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts between state and federal agencies to address possible extremist plots. The ongoing investigation into the 22‑year‑old mirrors similar global trends of monitoring and prosecuting individuals who use digital platforms to plan violent acts.
