On Thursday, October 29, 2026, the Republic of Turkey marked its 103rd Republic Day with nationwide celebrations, and Bulgaria’s Bessarabian Bulgarian community observed its heritage day in Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Moldova. The twin observances highlighted historic milestones that share the same calendar date in both countries, and drew international diplomatic attention from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

According to a report by TRT World, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed the nation and highlighted Turkey’s progress in defence, energy, and diplomacy as part of the 103rd anniversary celebrations. The televised ceremony featured cultural performances and the unveiling of new monuments. Erdogan described the republic as “stronger today than yesterday,” praising the nation’s trajectory since its founding in 1923.

UAE leaders issued congratulatory messages to the Turkish president, a storyline reported by the WAM press agency. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, sent a message from Abu Dhabi. Sheikhs Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai and Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi also dispatched similar messages, underscoring close diplomatic ties between the two states.

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman followed suit, sending a cable to Erdoğan that was reported by the Saudi Press Agency. The Crown Prince’s message wished the Turkish president continued good health, happiness, and “steady progress and prosperity” for the government and people of Turkey.

The Bessarabian Bulgarian community celebrated its day with concerts, exhibitions, and academic conferences that honor the 1838 consecration of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Bolhrad, Ukraine. The holiday was established by Dimitar Todorov, Secretary General of the All‑Bulgarian Union Father Paisius, to commemorate the first major Orthodox church built by Bulgarian settlers in Bessarabia. Celebrations took place in Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Moldova, reflecting the community’s cultural heritage and contributions to the nation’s development.

The Bulgarian Bulletin of the Bulgarian Air Force (BTA) provided a concise historical timeline for October 29 in Bulgaria. The bulletin noted that the Transfiguration Church was consecrated there in 1838 by a group of 10,000 Bulgarian immigrants. It also highlighted Prince Valdemar of Denmark’s brief election as Prince of Bulgaria in 1886, the Bulgarian Socialist Party’s full membership in the Socialist International in 2003, the results of the 2006 presidential election where Georgi Parvanov and Angel Marin received 75.95% of the vote, and Bulgaria’s adoption of the Bulgarian version of the Euro, “evro,” for European Union documents in 2007.

While the BTA bulletin focused on historical events, other outlets emphasized the diplomatic and cultural layers added to the day by the participation of international leaders and the Bessarabian Bulgarian community. Together, these observances paint a picture of a day that intertwines national pride, diplomatic goodwill, and cultural remembrance across borders.

Observers noted that the combination of Turkey’s republican celebration with the Bessarabian Bulgarian heritage day underscores the enduring ties between Turkic and Balkan peoples. The day’s events served not only to mark historical milestones but also to reinforce contemporary diplomatic relationships and cultural bonds that extend across the region.
