In brief
In a recent interview, Trump suggested that he would be open to a third presidential term if the 22nd Amendment were not restrictive. He highlighted his remaining tenure while noting the amendment’s exacting language.
Donald Trump voiced a willingness to seek a third U.S. presidential term when questioned during a podcast interview, a remark that was reported by TASS after being relayed by Fox News. The comments were recorded on the New York Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast, where Trump acknowledged the 22nd Amendment’s restriction but expressed a desire to run if the law permitted it.
According to the TASS report, Trump stated:
"I'd love to run again if I had the chance, but the language (of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution that limits presidents to two elected terms in office - TASS) is very exacting."He added that the amendment’s wording leaves no room for a third term under the strictly interpreted limits.
Trump also referenced the time remaining in his current term, noting that he has two years left. He commented:
"That's a long time. You can do a lot in that period of time."The statement reflects the fact that, by law, his second presidency is set to conclude in January 2029.
The 22nd Amendment, adopted in 1951, explicitly limits any individual to two presidential terms. While Trump has previously indicated an interest in a potential reelection bid for a third term, he reiterated that the constitutional constraint is a definitive barrier under the current legal framework.
These remarks were shared after Trump had been reelected to a second term in November 2024, following his first term from 2017‑2021. The interview, captured by the New York Post’s podcasters, was subsequently reported by Fox News, which passed the conversation on to TASS for distribution.
