In brief

On October 29, 2026, Turkey celebrated its 103rd Republic Day, receiving congratulations from UAE leaders, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and NATO commands worldwide. Simultaneously, Bessarabian Bulgarians celebrated the day in Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Moldova, commemorating the 1838 consecration of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Bolhrad as a symbol of diaspora heritage.

On Thursday, October 29, 2026, a series of observances unfolded across multiple nations, honoring Turkey’s 103rd Republic Day and Bessarabian Bulgarians’ Day, with diplomatic messages from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and NATO, while Bulgarian communities celebrated the historic 1838 consecration of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Bolhrad.

Turkey’s Republic Day Celebrations

According to the United Arab Emirates news agency WAM, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice‑President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Sultan Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan delivered congratulatory messages to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from Abu Dhabi, emphasising close diplomatic ties. The messages were issued at 9:27 AM local time on 29 October 2026.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Press Agency reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent a cable to President Erdoğan wishing him good health and to the Turkish government and people steady progress and prosperity. The message was transmitted at 13:33 local time on 29 October 2026.

NATO Headquarters in Brussels, together with its worldwide commands, posted congratulatory messages on social media, highlighting joint maritime and air force cooperation and sharing photos of Turkish naval and air force assets. NATO’s Allied Maritime Command shared a photograph of Turkish warships sailing through the Istanbul Strait with a caption inviting congratulations; the Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum posted a Turkish greeting wishing the Republic of Turkey the best; the Allied Joint Force Command Norfolk and NATO Allied Air Command also posted Turkish celebratory messages, and the Allied Land Command in Izmir sent a “Stronger together” note. These gestures celebrated the 103rd anniversary of Turkey’s founding in 1923, proclaimed by Atatürk in the aftermath of the Turkish War of Independence.

Bessarabian Bulgarians’ Day Observed

Bulgaria’s State Television Agency (BTA) reports that on October 29, citizens in Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Moldova celebrated Bessarabian Bulgarians’ Day, a holiday established by Dimitar Todorov, Secretary General of the All‑Bulgarian Union Father Paisius, to honour the 1838 consecration of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Bolhrad. The day commemorates the first major Orthodox church built by Bulgarian settlers in Bessarabia, with more than 10,000 people contributing to its construction.

The tradition was interrupted after World War II and officially revived in the late 20th century by the Rodolyubets association. Celebrations in Bulgarian, Ukrainian, and Moldovan venues include concerts, exhibitions, academic conferences, and cultural events that highlight Bulgarian heritage and the community’s contribution to national development.

The BTA bulletin also lists a series of Bulgarian historical milestones on the date: the 1838 consecration; Prince Valdemar of Denmark’s election as Prince of Bulgaria in 1886 and subsequent decline of the throne due to Russian disapproval; the Bulgarian Socialist Party’s 2003 admission as a full member of the Socialist International; the 2006 presidential election’s second round, where the tandem of Georgi Parvanov and Angel Marin secured 75.95% of the vote and won a second term; and the 2007 adoption of the Bulgarian version of the Euro, “evro,” in official EU documents.

Thus October 29, 2026, served as a day of national pride for Turkey and a cultural celebration for Bessarabian Bulgarians, with international recognition underscoring diplomatic ties and shared heritage.
