In brief
New Zealand police and customs seized a Brazil‑origin container at Port of Tauranga carrying 250 kg of cocaine, valued at about 45 million U.S. dollars. Five men were arrested, and searches in Auckland uncovered high‑powered firearms and additional charges of organized crime. The seizure follows an earlier 137 kg drug bust in the Auckland region.
On Friday, New Zealand police and customs officials seized a shipping container from Brazil that had entered New Zealand through the Port of Tauranga and concealed 250 kg of cocaine, a warrant‑issued operation that culminated in the arrest of five men, Xinhua reports.
The container, which originally arrived in Tauranga, was rerouted to Auckland under monitoring. Inside ten duffel bags, officials uncovered the cocaine, an amount equating to an estimated street value of 80 million NZ dollars or roughly 45 million U.S. dollars, according to the police statement.
Security footage and eyewitness accounts suggest that four men were apprehended in the early hours of Thursday when three attempted to transfer the drugs to a van and a fourth was detained nearby as a lookout. The arrests, made by police working with customs, received confirmation from a statement released on Friday evening.
After the initial arrests, investigators executed six search warrants across Auckland, locating four high‑powered firearms at a single address and detaining a fifth man for weapons possession. The four guns and the fifth individual were added to the charges already facing the five men, namely possession of cocaine for supply, possession of firearms and participation in an organized criminal group.
Police also announced that the 250‑kg seizure follows an earlier operation in the Auckland region that saw 137 kg of cocaine seized on Tuesday, an event reported by Xinhua and corroborated by a separate article from News.az.
All five men, whose ages range from 29 to 41, have appeared in the Auckland District Court, where they face the charges outlined above. Police officials highlighted ongoing investigations that could yield further charges.
The joint operation, led by New Zealand Police Narcotics Squad and customs officers, underscores a broader strategy to curb international drug trafficking pipelines feeding the domestic market, according to police spokespeople.
Officials remain tight‑lipped about the identities of the men arrested or any links to wider drug networks; investigations remain in progress, with authorities alerting the public to follow court proceedings for further developments.
