In brief
The High Court in Eldoret, Kenya, has sentenced Peter Ushuru Khalumi and David Ekai Lokere to 35 years each for the murder of acclaimed steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat, whose death has sparked outrage in the athletics community.
In a case that has gripped both Kenya and Uganda, two men have been sentenced to 35 years in prison following the murder of Benjamin Kiplagat, a renowned Ugandan Olympian. The athlete was fatally stabbed on New Year's Eve in Eldoret, a town recognized as a prominent training hub for distance runners.Justice Reuben Nyakundi condemned the actions of Peter Ushuru Khalumi and David Ekai Lokere during the sentencing, describing their behavior as brutal towards a defenseless individual. Evidence presented in court, including surveillance footage, indicated that the assailants had deliberately followed Kiplagat, who had been in his car prior to the attack, signifying a premeditated plan to take his life. The emotional toll of the incident was palpable during the court proceedings, especially as Kiplagat’s mother spoke directly to the judge, imploring him to impose life sentences on the perpetrators. She recounted her son's journey from running barefoot to becoming an international sports star and the primary provider for his family. As reported by the Nation newspaper, she highlighted the fact that the killers did not rob Kiplagat despite him having cash and a valuable mobile phone, insinuating a motive rooted in malice rather than robbery.Although the court did not hand down the life sentences that Kiplagat's family had urged for, they expressed relief that the verdict was a step toward justice. The athlete, who was only 34 at the time of his death, was celebrated for reaching the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and holding the Ugandan record in the event. The tragic murder of Kiplagat marks the continuation of a disturbing trend, as Kenya has seen the violent deaths of several prominent athletes in recent years, raising concerns within the sporting community.
