In brief
Rocky Elsom, former captain of Australia's national rugby team, faces an international arrest warrant following a conviction for embezzlement in France.
An international arrest warrant has been issued for former Australian rugby star Rocky Elsom after a French court convicted him of embezzling €700,000 from RC Narbonne, a prestigious French rugby club, during his presidency in 2015-16. Elsom, who played 75 times for the Wallabies and captained the team, was sentenced to five years in prison in absentia. Currently based in Dublin, coaching at the Catholic University School, Elsom is also a celebrated rugby athlete in Ireland, having played for Leinster Rugby. His tenure at RC Narbonne was marred by allegations of financial mismanagement, including unjustified payments and phantom salaries, which led the club to administration and relegation. Elsom is required to repay around €705,000 following this conviction, with the court's sentence exceeding the two-year term initially requested by prosecutors.
