In brief

A Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian republic of Tatarstan’s city of Nizhnekamsk has killed at least 13 people, including a child, and wounded 39. The attack, the most deadly of its kind in Russia since the war began, targeted industrial sites including oil refineries. Russian officials confirmed the strike, mourned the victims, and said 450 drones were shot down. Ukrainian forces have intensified long‑range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, underscoring the escalating civilian toll in the conflict.

At least 13 people were killed by a Ukrainian drone strike that targeted the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region, officials said on Sunday. One child was among the victims and 39 others were injured.

The attack is the most deadly single incident in Russia since the war began and is believed to have targeted industrial sites, including major oil refineries and a large petrochemical company.

Russian authorities confirmed the strike, mourned the dead and declared a period of mourning across Tatarstan. The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, and Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.

Local reports indicated that the strike lasted several hours from overnight into the morning, with large plumes of smoke and flames visible and air‑raid sirens sounding. Russian air defences reportedly shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones during the night.

Ukraine’s campaign of long‑range strikes on Russian energy infrastructure has intensified, aiming to disrupt revenue and logistics for the war effort. Civilian casualties have increased as these operations target industrial and residential areas.

The incident adds to recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, including a large drone and missile strike on Kyiv that killed 21 people last week and a Russian artillery strike on Kharkiv that killed five people.
