A seven-month-old girl was shot and killed while sitting in her pushchair in 'broad daylight' in New York City's borough of Brooklyn, police have said. Authorities believe the child was the unintended victim of a suspected gang-related shooting.
Footage from the scene shows two men driving against the flow of traffic through the Williamsburg neighborhood. A man sitting on the back of the motorbike drew a gun and fired at least two rounds, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a news conference.
Following the incident, the bike crashed, with one suspect apprehended while a 'massive' manhunt is underway for the driver, Tisch explained.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant. Today is a devastating reminder of how much more work there is to be done to combat gun violence across this city.
Witnesses recount that several adults and children, including two in buggies, were present on the street corner when shots were fired. The girl's parents ran for cover in a nearby store, where they discovered their child had been shot. One witness, Bernius Maldonado, described the chaos, saying, All the kids started ducking in the corner. The family went to the store, and the mom started screaming when she noticed the baby was bleeding from [her] head.
Emergency services were alerted around 13:21 local time, and the child was transported to Woodhull Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Fortunately, no other individuals were reported injured or killed during the incident.
As the investigation continues, police are working to connect the apprehended suspect, who fits the shooter's description, while they also stress the importance of addressing gun violence in the city.
