US officials are exploring whether to file charges against a homeowner who shot and killed a house cleaner who mistakenly showed up at the wrong address.

Police discovered Maria Florinda Rios Perez deceased in her husband's arms on the front porch of a residence in Whitestown, Indiana, shortly before 7:00 AM local time on Wednesday. The authorities had responded to a call about a possible home invasion, but reports indicate that neither Rios Perez nor her husband had entered the home.

The case has been sent to the Boone County Prosecutor's Office for review to ascertain if any criminal charges will be pressed. The police have withheld identities of those involved, citing the complexity of the case.

Grieving husband Mauricio Velazquez, who wanted justice for his 32-year-old wife, stated that the fatal bullet came through the door. He emphasized that they should have called the police instead of firing a weapon.

According to prosecutor Kent Eastwood, the situation is complicated by Indiana's stand-your-ground law, which allows individuals to use reasonable force, including deadly force, in self-defense. Similar tragic incidents have been reported in the US, highlighting the growing concern over such laws.
