An Oregon teacher was in the middle of a special‑needs class at Silver Rail Elementary when a 16‑year‑old former student drawn a shotgun and began shooting. The teacher threw her mobile phone, tackled the assailant on the floor, and tried to wrestle the weapon away.
A nearby father of a student, armed with a .40‑caliber pistol, rushed into the classroom and fired multiple times, killing the attacker. His intervention came just hours before the gunman had started firing, preventing further loss of life.
The shooting left three children and a teacher dead and left a 54‑year‑old teacher and a seven‑year‑old student with injuries. Police confirmed the suspect, Griffin J. John II, had 44 rounds of shotgun ammunition and fired about fifteen shots inside the school.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the bravery of the teacher and the father, noting that the teacher was unharmed and had likely prevented additional casualties. The father, identified as Kaylub Giamanco, declined public recognition but was thanked by President Trump and Governor Kate Kotek for ending the tragedy.
Investigators continue to probe how the teen obtained and transported the shotgun and what the motive was. The community has set up a memorial outside the school and held vigils to honor the victims and heroes who prevented greater loss of life.
